Guided by an authentic work process, artist duo TILO&TONI provide a playful commentary on the nature of image-making, adopting numerous artistic disciplines throughout.
For duo TILO&TONI (Germany) the process takes precedence over the idea. Trained in stonemasonry, sculpture, painting and photography, their work plays on the unsteady ground of contemporary image making. What is a photograph? How is art different from advertising? What is a gallery space? Pop prints, fashion, stock photos and amateur pictures are sampled, remixed and appropriated to answer these rhetorical questions. Their latest project – In the woods the waterfall is rushing – explores the romantic ideal, questioning themes of alienation and nostalgia.
