Galerie Wouter van Leeuwen,
“Sobol’s latest work brought him on a voyage through the American Deep South. Guided by a long-term ambition to understand what it means ‘to be an American“
Jacob Aue Sobol’s (b. 1976, Denmark) work is visibly distinct; both intimacy and a use of contrast driven black and white film appear throughout where shadow and light cast aside exterior perceptions and rather centre his photographs around authentic connections. The Magnum photographer’s photographic fascination stems from an unwavering desire to photograph the body as our senses perceive it and a will to capture life as it is being experienced. The essence of ‘snapshot’ photography is an effective way of articulating his outlook, as he views it as a form that expresses our emotions with the most immediacy.
