“From Lourdes to lesser-known Christian pilgrimage sites in Ireland and Poland, Alys’ Ex-Voto project highlights the traces that devotees leave on the sacred landscapes they traverse.“
Alys Tomlinson (b. 1975, United Kingdom) first came into contact with photography in her teens, when her father gifted her an old Pentax camera. Having initially pursued university studies in English and Communications – offering a solid foundation in narrative and storytelling – Tomlinson later studied Photography at Central Saint Martins College of Art. For Ex-Voto, the artist shot portraits of religious devotees, as well as the landscapes they traverse, on a large Victorian-style single frame camera. The project, which will be published in book form in 2019, saw Tomlinson named Sony World Photographer of the year for 2018.
