Fifty Dots Gallery,
“I was intrigued by the community’s efforts to adopt a decidedly feminine identity within a patriarchal society.“
Coming from a background in sociology, Alexandra Carles-Tolra’s (b. 1988, Spain) photography deals with identity and belonging, particularly among social and cultural groups and structures. Her latest project, Where We Belong, follows a group of Jane Austen enthusiasts on an annual get-together. While dealing with real-life scenarios, the ways in which Alejandra treats her subjects and situations feels ever so slightly performative, leaving the viewer to question the line between reality and fiction. Alejandra is currently based in London.
