Weronika Gęsicka (b. 1984, Poland) tackles the notion of memory. Her material is sourced from image banks, archives, police records as well as constructed artefacts or sculptures, often made in collaboration with craftsmen or other artists. Gęsicka’s photographs move playfully between fact and fiction, oscillating between an imagined future and manipulated past. Her confrontation of ‘truth’ resonates strongly in today’s world of fake news paranoia and performative identities on social media. Surrealist and bizarre, cut-and-paste creations offer an alternative view on life which is both nightmarish yet somehow entirely plausible.
